Visa regulations for
Visiting relatives with a permanent residence in China (Q1 or Q2 Visa)

State of residence

This visa qualifies exclusively for:

  • family members of Chinese citizens or foreign citizens with a permanent residence permit in China, which plan a family visit or foster care (concerning children) in China. "Family members" refers to spouse, parents, sons, daughters, sons- or daughters-in-law, brothers and sisters, grand children and parents-in-law. (Q1)
  • people who are related to Chinese citizens or foreign citizens with a permanent residence permit for China and who wish to travel to China for a short-term family visit (Q2)

Q1 is required for a long-term visit of more than 180 days.
Q2 is required for a short-term visit of less than 180 days.

 
IMPORTANT NOTICE!

From August 9, 2023, to December 31, 2025, all eligible applicants applying for a visa with single or double entry are no longer obligated to submit their fingerprints.

This applies to the following visa category:

  • M (Business or Installation Visa)
  • L (Tourist Visa)
  • Q2 (Visiting relatives with a permanent residence in China)
  • C (Crew-Member Visa)
  • G (Transit Visa)

Travelers with ordinary passports may enter China visa-free until December 31, 2025 for business, tourism purposes, visiting friends and relatives as well as for transit and stay there for a duration of up to 15 days (each stay). This applies to citizens of the following countries:

  • Germany
  • France
  • Italy
  • The Netherlands
  • Spain
  • Malaysia
  • Switzerland
  • Ireland
  • Hungary
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Luxembourg
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Poland
Citizens of your nationality are exempted from the visa obligation for each stay of up to 15 days until December 31, 2025.*
*Requirements:
  • ordinary passport (valid for the entire duration of stay)
  • flight booking confirmation / flight ticket (return or onward flight)
  • letter of invitation from the relatives in China and a copy of ID of the inviting person (front and back side)
  • Itinerary for the entire duration of your stay (if applicable)

PLEASE NOTE: The Letter of Invitation must clearly state the purpose of visit and duration of stay (no longer than 15 days).

Please Note
Before submitting the documents, the Visa Application Form must be completed online. visumPOINT will gladly undertake this for you. Nevertheless, if you decide to fill in the application form by yourself, please make sure that you select the correct submission location and choose the option "By visiting the Visa Center" at 9.1 B.  Otherwise, your application cannot be handed in, and additional costs may be incurred.
SUBMISSION POSSIBILITIES
  • Consulate Frankfurt for applicants from Nordrhein-Westfalen, Baden-Württemberg, Hessen, Rheinland Pfalz and Saarland
  • Alternatively, it is possible to submit documents and fingerprints in Berlin. For the corresponding visa requirements, please select "Berlin" as the state of residence.

PLEASE NOTE: Holders of a Q1-visa are obligated to convert the visa to a residence permit in the local Immigration Office within 30 days after entry!

Specifics
  • During the personal interview, a biometric photo of the applicant is taken on site. IMPORTANT: The Consulate kindly requests applicants to avoid wearing light-coloured clothing!
  • If you are travelling from China to Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan and then going back to China, a visa with double entry is required
  • If you plan to visit Tibet during your stay, an entry permission from an official travel agency in China is neccesary
Required Documents
  • Visa Application Form
    • before submission of all documents, the visa application form needs to be filled in online. In order to ensure an uncomplicated and trouble-free process visumPOINT will gladly take care of this with the data stated (subject to extra fee). You will then receive the visa application form from us for your signature. Please send us the completed filling aid together with a scan of your current biometric photo and a copy of your passport's biodata page in advance if you want us to fill in the application form for you. 
    • alternatively, you may also fill in the form yourself. For more information please see the embassy webpage. Please make sure to choose the correct consulate (see submission possibilities) and state that your documents will be submitted and picked up in person (please select "By visiting the Visa Center" for item 9.1B in the visa application)! Afterwards please send us the two-fold signed application (sheet 1 and page 8 of the application at 9.1a) together with your documents
    • please pay attention to the document Instructions for filling in visa application, otherwise the application may get rejected!
  • Original Passport
    • valid for at least 6 more months/ min. 12 months for half year visa/ min. 18 months for one year visa
    • at least with 2 free opposing pages
    • in case of Turkish entry stamps in your passport, please fill in this form and state all you past travels abroad visible in your passport
  • Passport Photo
    • please make sure you comply with the following requirements, otherwise you may have to have new passport photos taken at the appointment. The waiting time for this can take up to two hours:
      • do not wear glasses
      • the passport photo must be recently taken (no older than 6 months; may be used only once when applying) and biometric
      • neutral facial expression, head must be centered and not tilted, looking straight into the lense
      • no jewellery or ornaments
      • facial characteristics (e.g. eyes, eyebrows, ears) must be visible (long hair should be tied up behind the head)
      • white background and not wearing wearing light-coloured clothing
      • in colour
      • further requierements
    • please do not glue the photo on your application, just enclose it separately
    • the photo you bring to the submission appointment should be identical to the passport photo uploaded during the application process!

    No recently taken photo at the moment? You can take a photo yourself and send it (from the shoulder height to the top of the head, in front of a white background, JPEG format) to visa@visumpoint.com. We will edit it as requested by the consulate. The corresponding service fee can be found in the price calculator, please see 'Additional Services'.
    visumPOINT creates all passport photos with the highest possible precision. However, the Visa Application Center makes a final decision based on case by case whether to accept or reject the documents. If your photo is rejected, another one can be taken on site.

  • Original and Copy of respective Civil Status Certificate

      • a copy of passport and ID card from inviting person
      • Flight booking confirmation
    • if the inviting person is not Chinese citizen, we also need a copy of the visa (valid for at least 180 days!) and a passport copy
  • Informed consent from BOTH parents
    • you just need it if a child is under 16 years old and is traveling alone or only with one part of his parents
    • you also need a copy of the birth certificate
  • Only if submitting in Berlin:
    • Additional form for previous travels:

        • if your current passport has been issued after 01.01.2015
        • and/or if your current passport has an entry stamp from Turkey or from an Arab country
      • if you have previously travelled to Macau, Taiwan or Hongkong please just fill in "China" (not "Republic of China" or the like)

    • Copy of passport (data page)
    • Copy of previous visa for China, if those are in a different or older passport. Additionally, a copy of the data page of the concerned passport is necessary.
